Obituary of Frieda Marie Dawes

Frieda Marie Dawes (May 9, 1909 - February 14, 2008) Frieda Adele Marie Mallen Dawes (Fritzie) was born May 7th, 1909 in Duluth, Minnesota, and passed away on February 14th, 2008 at Franke Tobey Jones Retirement Estates in Tacoma, Washington at the age of 98. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marie and Philip Mallen, her sister, Dorothy, her brothers, Walter and George, and her husband of 63 years, Carl. Frieda and Carl had 3 children, Joanne (Bob) Miller, Warren (Janet) Dawes, and Bonnie (Tom) Hewitt, six grandchildren, Kim(Dan)Bucklin, Kevin(Toni)Miller, Dan(Tina)Miller, Eric(Shelby)Dawes, Jeannie(Brent)Brooks, Jim(Lisa)Hewitt and eight great grandchildren, two of whom were born on her birthday. After high school, she worked as a waitress, a governess and cook, in a bakery and for a time as a cook in a nursing home. Mostly she was a full-time mother. Carl retired from the US Mail Service in 1965 and they realized their dream of travel in an Airstream trailer. Through their affiliation with the Wally Byam Caravan Club, they traveled all over the US, to Canada, Alaska, the British Isles, France, Germany, Africa, Asia, Hawaii, Tahiti and Mexico. When the tiny trailer they were using in Scotland tipped over in the wind, they were given the Mr. and Mrs. Congeniality Award. In 1980, they retired again at an Airstream Park in Apache Junction, Arizona. Carl died in August, 1993. In August, 1994, Frieda moved to the Franke Tobey Jones Retirement Estates to be closer to her family. She loved the 13 ½ years she lived there. She is remembered for her daily walks, her avid cribbage games, and for her singing with her granddaughter, Kim. Frieda was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. In later years she enjoyed the teachings of Dr. Robert Schuller. She is known and respected for her happy, positive attitude and her love of people. In return, she was much loved. A celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 23, 2008 in the Lillian Pratt Parlor at Franke Tobey Jones Retirement Estates. Remembrances may be made to: Annual Fund, Development Office, Franke Tobey Jones Retirement Estates, 5340 North Bristol, Tacoma, WA 98407
